Tuition to increase for University of Missouri System

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Those who attend any of the four schools within the University of Missouri system can expect to see a rise in tuition prices in the 2024–2025 school year.

Undergraduate course tuition will rise by 5%, and graduate or professional course tuition will increase between 3% and 5%. The decision was made at the University of Missouri Board of Curators meeting Thursday morning.

“We are proud to support student success by providing a world-class education at an exceptional value,” University of Missouri President Mun Choi said in a release. “Our students are completing their degrees on time and with the experience needed to launch great careers right away. The tuition increase will ensure that we keep delivering results that change lives and support the economic development in Missouri.”

According to a release, the increase in tuition rates is a reflection of inflation. Since 2018, the cost of a degree has fallen 11% in comparison to inflation rates.

There are several ways the tuition is spent throughout the universities, including more course sections, advisors, faculty, tutoring support, new classrooms and laboratories, instruments, and opportunities.

“Even with the increases in tuition and fees, the cost of education at UM universities is significantly less than the national average,” the release stated. “Additionally, the UM universities continue to outperform their peers related to retention and graduation rates, as well as post-graduation success.”

Post-graduation success is defined as how many students achieve their goals six months after walking across the stage. In 2023, 95% of students in the University of Missouri system achieved those goals within six months of graduating, which was over eight points higher than the nation’s average.

“As curators, we have two key guideposts when we consider tuition,” Robin Wenneker, chair of the UM Board of Curators, said. “First, we must be financially responsible fiduciaries of the university. Second, we must do all we can to provide an extraordinary educational experience that will position our graduates for immediate and long-term success. We are meeting both of these important objectives with today’s announcement and look forward to a promising 2024–2025 academic year at all UM universities.”
