The Muny returns for 106th season

ST. LOUIS – As the temperatures continue to hit the bi-state area, The Muny is back to remind us that it is officially the summer season.

“We are excited to get this season started,” Gabe Hartwig, the communications and public relations manager at The Muny, told FOX 2 Monday.

The oldest and largest outdoor theater is back for its 106th season with seven shows: Les Misérables, Dreamgirls, Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Fiddler on the Roof, Waitress, In the Heights and Anything Goes.

“(We have) seven must-see Broadway shows and a little something for everybody,” Hartwig said.

The historic theatre brings in lifelong fans.

“I’ve been coming to The Muny since I was five years old,” Kelsey Guhtrie said.

There’s plenty of room for first-timers as well. Roberta Brown flew in from Pittsburgh on Sunday just for Monday night’s show.

“I actually came to see Les Misérables,” Brown said. “We got here yesterday, and we are going back tomorrow.”

As showgoers picnicked a couple hours before opening night, there’s one thing they can’t really prepare for.

“What can you do about the weather?” Terri Klages said.

Monday was the sixth day in a row of 90-degree weather., but by the time of the show, temperatures had eased up into the low 80s with a nice breeze.

“There is a nice breeze and so that always helps,” Klages said. “The new fans that they put in a couple years ago have been really helpful.”

This season at The Muny runs through August 25.
