Storms knock out power at Grove Ice Cream Shop, recovering from smash-and-grab

ST. LOUIS – On a day when St. Louis experienced record heat, a late afternoon thunderstorm took out power at Serendipity Ice Cream Shop in The Grove. Earlier in the week, their glass door was shattered by an overnight smash-and-grab.

“A lot of people in the neighborhood and customers even from the old Webster Groves location have been coming in to show support,” store manager Kimberly Patterson said.

The outage forced the store to close early Wednesday. Credit and debit card payments were not an option, and they were only able to take cash payments.

“Even with this going on tonight, we’ve had several families that have left, found an ATM, and come back,” Patterson said.

Ameren crews responded quickly, according to St. Loius Alderman Michael Browning. He appreciated the company’s response and added, “I’m just grateful that with the power out, it’s not so hot anymore.”

Earlier in the day, the St. Louis Cardinals were prepared to help fans stay cool as they headed to Wednesday’s game. The team set up seven 125-gallon “Water Monster” coolers around the ballpark to provide fans with free water to cool down and stay hydrated.

Large “swamp” fans were placed near the gates to help cool off guests and staff as they entered the ballpark. Ushers were instructed to look for signs of heat stroke and heat exhaustion and offer fans shaded areas to avoid illnesses.

A team spokesperson said an extra medical crew was on hand to help with any heat cases. The team also allowed fans in the Loge (Level 3) and Pavilion and Terrace (Level 4) levels to move seats into more shaded areas as long as they did not take the ticketed seats of other fans.
