ST. LOUIS – Near record-breaking heat this Father’s Day didn’t keep thousands of people across the greater St. Louis area from getting outside and celebrating dad.
Even a near 100-degree day didn’t stop St. Louis football fans from tailgating ahead of the UFL Championship Game at The Dome at America’s Center Sunday.
Ahmed Wahba and his group were out grilling in the parking lot just north of the dome, trying their best to stay cool.
“We got the tent; we got some umbrella’s here. You know, that’s all you really can do,” Wahba said.
Wahba brought his daughter, Sofia, with him for their first football game together. Sofia said she was just glad she could spend the day with her dad.
“My dad, he’s a huge football fan, and all I want to do is make him proud today, because it’s Father’s Day and I want to enjoy it with him,” she said.
A few tents away, David Cozart and his son, Ameer, were also trying to stay cool – and enjoying some quality time, too.
“When you get to hang with (your son), that’s the gift right there,” Cozart said. “Everything else is a bonus. That’s the key. Father’s Day wouldn’t be Father’s Day without the kid around.”
Ameer thinks dad’s like his don’t get enough credit for everything they do.
“Really, it should be more than just one day to celebrate, you know what I mean?” he said.
Across town in Forest Park, people were out golfing, exercising, and searching for some shade. Andrew Lett and his daughter, Drewanna, parked beneath a tree near the Grand Basin.
“It’s Father’s Day, she loves me and I love her, and Forest Park means a lot to us,” Lett said.
While dad’s sometimes get overlooked, the father’s we talked to said they don’t mind that—as long as their family is together.
“I couldn’t ask for anything else; spending time with my family, watching a little football,” Wahba said.
Sofia has some advice for us all.
“Be sure to be kind to your parents, because you never know if something is going to happen to them,” she said. “You don’t even have to give them a gift, just love on them and say, ‘You know what, I’m happy that you’re here with me.’”
