ST. LOUIS – Bloomberg Philanthropies has selected St. Louis as one of 25 U.S. cities to join a “sustainable cities” initiative in efforts to combat climate change.
St. Louis is now part of a three-year initiative called “Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities.” The opportunity launched earlier this month. Each of the cities involved will receive funding and resources to help with sustainable development.
Bloomberg says the efforts will help “turbocharge” cities’ efforts to “proactively build low-carbon, resilient, and economically thriving communities,” according to a news release. The philanthropy has committed $650 million to support cities in reducing emissions.
The St. Louis Development Corporation credits the city’s leadership and ambition for the selection.
“Despite facing significant vulnerabilities, the city has persisted in advancing community prosperity and economic development amid the climate crisis,” said SLDC via a March 12 news release.
Potential projects include affordable energy-efficient housing, efforts to increase access to clean energy, and investments in electric vehicles and infrastructure.
Kansas City is the only other Missouri city involved with the sustainable cities initiative, which also includes Atlanta, Cleveland, and Memphis, among others.
