Shooting victim found in North Hampton garage identified

ST. LOUIS – The family of Christopher Gray, 25, gathered outside Peace Tabernacle Church on Monday to pray. St. Louis Metropolitan Police identified Gray as the shooting victim found inside a garage in the North Hampton neighborhood last week.

“He was loved by everyone in the community,” Phil Brownlee, church bishop and grandfather of Gray, said.

Police initially classified the death as suspicious, pending an autopsy. They encourage anyone with information to call CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS (8477) or the homicide division at 314-444-5371.

Brownlee said his grandson routinely helped carry out the church’s mission of helping the community by carrying bags of donated groceries to community members on Sundays and performing maintenance work on the church throughout the week.

Gray was also an artist. He was found with a drawing book in his pocket.

“He was drawing a picture of a cross, saying that Jesus loves you,” Brownlee said.

Family members are still waiting for answers from police, according to Brownlee. He encourages anyone with information to share what they know and reach out to the church while his family prays for justice.

“We are here to help the community,” Brownlee said. “Now, we need help.”
