Resources and tips for staying cool during St. Louis heat wave

ST. LOUIS — The excessive heat wave has hit St. Louis and looks like it will last for a couple weeks. We spoke with citizens and visitors to see how they’re managing to stay cool during this intense heat.

“It’s very hot and it gives me headaches. And I don’t like the heat,” said Emily Hoffminster,  an out-of-town visitor.

Several citizens and visitors stayed cool by enjoying the water areas in the City Garden.

“We were  looking for splash pads because it’s nice for the kids to get out and kind of play in the water. This park has a lot of shade too. So for us grown folks sitting on the sidelines, you know what I mean. We don’t have to be getting baked by the sun,” said Mark Barger,  an out-of-town visitor.

“It was super hot, but we had a great time. We stayed in the shade. We caught a little bit of breeze,” said Nathaniel Kamp, a citizen.

While some stayed cool with water, others waited until the evening to enjoy events like the Downtown Summer Nights’ Movie Night.

Gentry Trotter founder of Cool Down Heat Up St. Louis wants everyone to know that help is available for those struggling with utility bills.

“If they need utility help, they can go to cooldownsaintlouis.org. We’re working with Ameren as closely as we can to make sure  there are no disconnections. But the responsibility lies on the other side, with the customer. You have to let us know you’re in need of help,” said Trotter.

Cool Down St. Louis will be distributing Cool Down assistance cards door-to-door and will distribute free air conditioners at the end of the month.

“If you want to donate some air conditioners to us, we’ll take them! We just don’t have enough to go around throughout the area—throughout the region at least,” said Trotter.

Cool Down St. Louis is asking for your help by donating a check to Commerce Bank made out to Cool Down St. Louis or by donating brand new air conditioners. These donations will help ensure that the elderly, disabled, and middle-class residents have the means to stay cool.
