Pre-Academy Recruitment Program reintroduced to STL

ST. LOUIS – The Ethical Society of Police held the first session of their free 10-week pre-academy training program to prepare those interested in a career in law enforcement Tuesday evening.

“There’s a lot of vacancies in law enforcement. There are a lot of vacancies and it’s not just on the commission side…we’re here to promote policing in a different light,” Sgt. Donny Walters, president of the Ethical Society of Police, said.

The program prepares anyone 18 and older for success in St. Louis City’s training programs for public safety careers such as police officers, dispatchers, park rangers, city marshals and administrative roles.

The program takes place every Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. until May 18. There are 30 spots available to register.

The program began in 2015 and has now been reintroduced due to the organization receiving a state-funded grant.

The academy focuses on physical fitness, basic report writing, basic constitutional law, public speaking skills, community service, professional etiquette and ethics.

“We have a lot of people that say, ‘Hey, I’m thinking about being a police officer, but I don’t know.’ This is the time to ask those questions. This is the time to help those develop what may be a thought into a reality,” Sgt. Walters said.

For those who may be interested in participating in the academy and gaining skills in law enforcement, applications can be found here.
