WAYNE COUNTY, Mo. – Piedmont, Missouri, has been named the State UFO Capital of Missouri due to numerous UFO sightings in 1973. To celebrate this title, the town has opened a park dedicated to its UFO history.
The park, named Piedmont–UFO Capital of Missouri Park, is located at 202 Legion Park Rd. in Piedmont. It has received five-star reviews on Google. It was created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1973 UFO sightings.
The park officially opened last month.

Residents of Piedmont and the surrounding areas reported witnessing unusual aerial phenomena. Many of those who saw the activity reached out to local law enforcement, sheriffs, and media outlets to share their stories.
These incidents garnered attention at both the local and national levels. However, there was no formal government investigation into these reports, as Project Blue Book, the program tasked with investigating UFO sightings, had been discontinued in 1969.
Dr. Harley Rutledge, a physics professor at Southeast Missouri State University, conducted an independent investigation into these sightings along with his team. In 1973, he published a paper on his findings, which later evolved into a book titled “Project Identification: The First Scientific Field Study of UFO Phenomena” in 1981.
The book chronicles his efforts to apply scientific methods to the study of UFOs, including setting up observation posts, using various instruments to gather data, and documenting sightings systematically. Dr. Rutledge’s approach was unique because he attempted to bring scientific rigor to a field often dominated by anecdotal reports and speculation.
The book describes the equipment, procedures, and protocols he used to observe and record these sightings. It presents the data collected, including eyewitness reports, photographs, and instrument readings. Dr. Rutledge analyzes this data, identifying patterns and offering potential explanations for the phenomena. The book concludes with his reflections on the implications of his findings for understanding UFO phenomena and recommendations for future research.
Today, the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, operating under the U.S. Secretary of Defense, manages reports related to unexplained aerial phenomena, commonly referred to as UFOs.
