Parkland Health in Bonne Terre named rural emergency hospital

FARMINGTON, Mo – Parkland Health Center-Bonne Terre is now Missouri’s first Rural Emergency Hospital (REH), an effort by BJC HealthCare to expand healthcare access to rural communities.

This new hospital type was established by the federal government through the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021 and incorporated into the Missouri hospital definition through a bill signed into law by Governor Michael Parson in July 2023.

As a designated REH, Parkland-Bonne Terre will focus on expanded emergency services, transitioning patients needing inpatient care to Parkland Health Center in Farmington, which is less than 12 miles away.

By becoming an REH, Parkland-Bonne Terre can treat more patients in immediate need and utilize the BJC HealthCare hospital network for inpatient services. These changes will help provide equitable healthcare for those living in rural communities by facilitating access to essential services.

Parkland Health Center is a full-service acute care hospital in Farmington and operates a three-bed critical access hospital in Bonne Terre. They provide primary and secondary-level inpatient and outpatient services to the people of St. Francois County and the surrounding areas in southeastern Missouri.
