ST. LOUIS — City leaders are taking new steps to combat the ongoing problem of opioid overdoses. They are providing more access to Narcan through distribution boxess, which can reverse opioid overdoses. The first two boxes are installed at 1520 Market and near the main entrance at Soulard Market.
City health officials will officially announce the installation of these boxes today. They plan to make Narcan available citywide. More boxes will be installed in the coming months, including at City Hall. The city’s Behavioral Health Bureau is partnering with the St. Louis Public Library System to place boxes in neighborhoods heavily affected by overdoses.
City health leaders emphasize that these boxes are part of their mission to provide faster access to resources. Overdose fatalities have been increasing since 2017. The peak was in 2020 with 490 deaths, and last year there were 489 deaths.
