JEFFERSON CITY, Mo – State and federal agencies have been in discussions regarding the ongoing drought situation. The state climatologist has pointed out that although rainfall is forecasted for March, it must exceed normal levels to offset the current dry conditions.
The drought has raised concerns about wildfires, depleted soil moisture, and potential impacts on agriculture. Without more rainfall in the spring, farmers may be forced to make difficult decisions. Missouri has already experienced nearly 500 wildfires this year, primarily in the southern region.
The Department of Conservation is urging caution regarding burning activities. The committee plans to reconvene in April to evaluate whether the governor should extend the drought alert order.
