ST. LOUIS — The jury has found the suspect in Jacque Mitchell’s death guilty of most of the charges against him. The trial commenced earlier this week, with the judge sending the case back to the jury around 11:30 a.m. on March 29.
It took less than five hours for them to reach a verdict. Joseph Dejoie was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter but acquitted of second-degree murder. Additionally, he was found guilty on charges including tampering with evidence, abandonment of a corpse, possession of a controlled substance, kidnapping, sodomy, and rape.
The jury deliberated on a sentence, recommending the maximum for the majority of the convictions, including three life sentences for the sex crimes.
Investigators discovered Mitchell dead in Dejoie’s apartment in Maryland Heights in March of last year. Her family reported her missing after last hearing from her on Tuesday, March 14th, 2023.
Surveillance footage from that night showed her leaving Maggie O’Brien’s in Sunset Hills. Prosecutors allege Mitchell met up with Dejoie afterward. Her body remained in his bedroom for six days. The judge is scheduled to formally sentence him on May 17th.
