Jefferson County’s crisis unit tackles mental health issues

HILLSBORO, Mo. — It was one of the greatest tragedies in recent memory in Jefferson County: a mother charged with the murders of her two small children.

The case of Ashley Parmeley is among many requiring the skills and expertise of the Crisis Intervention Unit with the Jefferson County Sheriff Office. Exposure to trauma can take a toll on individuals, especially to first responders, who witness trauma on a regular basis.

That is where the Crisis Intervention Unit plays a critically important role.

The unit not only responds to the mental health needs of the community – it also supports the dispatchers, paramedics, deputies and others tasked with responding to calls like the one involving Parmeley.

On this week’s Pulse of St. Louis, key members of the JCSO Crisis Intervention Unit spoke with Fox 2’s Jasmine Huda about their efforts to address mental health – in the community, among first responders, and at the county jail.
