Is Instagram down? Widespread login outages

ST. LOUIS — Many Instagram users have found themselves locked out of their accounts, with outages sharply increasing on DownDetector.com. The issue, which began earlier today, has seen a significant number of reports from frustrated users unable to log back in, with the problem affecting both the mobile app and the website interface.

According to user reports, attempts to log in are met with messages stating that their session has expired, and attempts to reset passwords or use two-factor authentication have proven futile for many. “An Unknown Error Has Occurred” is a common error message being reported, particularly by those trying to regain access through the app.

A particular report on DownDetector from a user encapsulates the widespread nature of the problem: “Messenger and Facebook logged me out a few minutes ago. I relogged successfully, but it logged me out after one second. Now I cannot log back in. When I reported the issue, there were only 40 reports, but now over 5000, so apparently, Instagram has some issues now.”

Meta, the parent company overseeing Instagram, along with Facebook, WhatsApp, Threads, and Messenger all have similar login issues. The sudden outage has left users and businesses alike in limbo, with no official word from Meta on the cause of the outage or an estimated timeline for when services might be restored to normal.
