Illegal firework may have led to St. Louis apartment explosion

ST. LOUIS – Investigators say an illegally-manufactured firework may have led to an apartment explosion Tuesday evening in south St. Louis.

Bomb and arson investigators with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department report that one man suffered serious injuries and lost part of his arm in the explosion.

The explosion happened around 6 p.m. Tuesday in the 7800 block of Germania Avenue.

According to a preliminary SLMPD investigation, the victim may have purchased a firework illegally prior to the explosion. Police say there was evidence of a firework that is not made or sold commercially near the scene of the explosion.

“The purchase or manufacturing of illegal fireworks is incredibly dangerous and can be deadly,” said SLMPD in a report Wednesday.

St. Louis City police have not provided any updates on the condition of the man who lost part of his arm. Bomb and arson investigators have been called in to take over the case.

Additional information is limited at this time. FOX 2 will update as more information becomes available.
