Not all of the history that we discuss on this show can be fun and light-hearted and jovial. Especially when we talk about Black American history, we need to take time to acknowledge the gross racism that has omitted countless skilled mixologists from being given their due respect, or worse any recorded history whatsoever. Today, we dive into the history of Black American bartender Louis Deal, who’s chance at bartending greatness was wiped from existence by the systemic racism of his peers.
Black Lives Matter.
Rage:
– 1 1/2 oz (45ml) Blended White Rum (Such as Probitas)
– 1/2 oz (15ml) Two Pepper Extract
– 1 oz (30ml) Lemon Juice
– 3/4 oz (22.5ml) Grenadine
Method: Combine all ingredients into a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake for 10 – 12 seconds to chill, dilute, and work out some of your anger. Double strain into a chilled rocks glass filled with ice. Garnish with a lemon-cherry flag, and pour one out for all those we’ve lost.
Two Pepper Extract:
– 250ml Everclear (75% ABV)
– 1/4 cup Black Peppercorn
– 1/8 Tsp Red Chili Flakes
Method: Combine ingredients into a sealable container like a mason jar, afix cap, and give a brief shake to combine. Allow to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes. Strain contents through a filter into a sterilized bottle. Keeps forever in the fridge.
