ST. LOUIS – A plea and sentencing hearing is set for Friday morning for a hit-and-run crime that resulted in the death of a high school student in 2022.
Jacob Adler is charged with “leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death” and “tampering with physical evidence.”
Back in July 2022, 17-year-old Matthew Nikolai was struck and killed walking across Chippewa Street near Ted Drewes Frozen Custard. A pickup truck hit the CBC high school student first, causing him to be thrown into the path of another car, which also struck him.
The second driver stopped and cooperated with the police. Probable cause statements allege Adler stopped, got out of his pickup truck and walked to the scene without identifying himself. Then he drove off.
Prosecutors also say that the day after the deadly crash, Adler took his truck to a repair shop to cover up the damages.
When police posted pictures of the truck online, the body shop manager contacted police and the truck was taken in as evidence.
Adler turned himself into the police the following week.
There have been several delays in bringing this case to justice. The plea hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. Friday morning at the Carahan Courthouse. There will immediately be a sentencing hearing after it.
