Growing frustration with water main breaks in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS – St. Louis residents say they’re feeling frustrated with the growing number of water main breaks throughout the city.

“The water pressure has been real low, like we couldn’t take showers,” Brennan Javier, a resident, said. “We had to go buy some water from QuikTrip so we could drink some water and then a couple of days ago the pipes were frozen, so no water was coming out of all the toilets when we flush.”

Javier noticed a break along his street a few days ago.

“There was a pipe break, I guess, and there was a bunch of trucks with flashing lights this morning, so I didn’t go over there and look at it. But I assume it’s pretty bad,” Javier said.

The city said they have crews working every day around the clock in 12-hour shifts.

“It’s a tough job to do in the weather and we appreciate their patience and understanding but also appreciate the very inconvenience of not having water in their home when they need it,” Curt Skouby, director of public utilities, said.

He said in the last two weeks they’ve seen more than 60 water main breaks.

“Most years, when you have real cold weather like this, we’ll get an increase in water main breaks and we’re scrambling to address them all,” Skouby said.

Javier hopes the crews working in his neighborhood will have the pressure restored soon.

“Water pressure is still real low in there. We’re still going off of the jugs that we got a couple of days ago,” Javier said. “Toilets are still not flushing but (there is) more water than a couple of days ago.”
