While a 6-3 record might have been a bit disappointing for some on the Lindbergh High School boys golf squad, coach Mike Tyler said his team is a model of consistency.
“Overall, we had a successful season,” Tyler said. “While our varsity match record was somewhat disappointing for some players, our ability to compete and include the largest boys golf team in the state, stands out as an example for the rest of the teams in our area.”
Leading the way for the Flyers this season was Braden Wright, who earned All-Conference First Team honors for his efforts. Wright shot a team-best for an 18-hole course, with an 82 at Crown Pointe April 22.
Blake Houston was also recognized with All-Conference honors on the Second Team for his season. Houston enjoyed success at Quail Creek Golf Course and The Colt, shooting a 37 on each nine-hole course.
Additionally, Freddy Amad, Jack Plager, Nick Tallevast and Hudson Eller all had success this season for Lindbergh.
Tyler said that Plager, Eller and Tallevast surprised him with their play this season.
“Jack and Hudson were first-year additions to the team, and Nick’s hard work during the off-season had him in the No. 1 spot at the start of the season,” he said.
Five members of the team were match medalists this season, with a pair of them earning low-round distinction on multiple occasions.
“Of our 16 varsity players, 10 of them shot in the 30s for nine holes at some time during the season,” Tyler said. “We need to be able to have all pistons firing at the same time to endure success on the course against our very competitive conference teams.”
Houston and Kellen Douglas graduated, but both left their mark with the Flyers.
“Blake is a standout hockey player, as well as a great leader and captain for our team,” Tyler said. “In addition to setting a great example for others to follow, he was instrumental in establishing an online presence for the past few years.
“Kellen Douglas was our captain and earned our Most Improved Award for this season. He shot a 39 in a match and improved his average a staggering 17 strokes from last season.”
While it may be the offseason, the Flyers will continue to work to get better by attending some golf clinics and checking out practices that are used by other programs.
“I encourage the players to practice with a purpose,” Tyler said. “I would like them to use our detailed statistics as a guide for areas of improvement.”
