Fire at south county recycling center prompts urgent call

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – Crews extinguished a fire early Tuesday morning at a south county recycling plant, a situation that renews a call for safer disposals.

The fire happened around 5 a.m. Tuesday at the Republic Services Recycling Facility near Interstate 55 and Bayless Avenue. No injuries were reported in the fire, but part of the highway was shut down while crews worked to clear the scene.

Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire, but suspect it may have happened due to improper disposal of lithium batteries.

The Lemay Fire Protection District says that improperly disposing of lithium batteries is the top cause of fires at recycling plants.

Officials are asking people who intend to recycle batteries to instead bring them to a large hardware or battery store for proper disposal free of charge.
