Fatal barn collapse results in one dead and injured another in Waterloo, Illinois



WATERLOO, Ill. – A barn collapse in Monroe County near County Club Lane in Waterloo, Illinois, resulted in one man’s death and another’s injury.

On Saturday, March 23, 2024, around 9:30 a.m., the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department responded to reports of the collapse.

Deputy Theresa Hitzemann reported the death of a 58-year-old man from Wildwood, Missouri. Initial investigations indicate that at 9:30 a.m., a worker at the scene placed a 911 call, reporting that the barn they were tearing down had collapsed, trapping two coworkers.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, along with the Waterloo Fire Department and Monroe County EMS, worked to free the trapped individuals.

One male victim was sent to Mercy South Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday morning to aid in the ongoing investigation. FOX 2 will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
