Families and foodies flock to Kirkwood Farmers’ Market for season-opening celebration

KIRKWOOD, Mo. – Hundreds of people went out to the Kirkwood Farmers’ Market Saturday to celebrate the official opening for the season.

Dan Mitchell is the co-owner of The Summit All Seasons Market.

“Today we have our opening celebration. However, we opened last week. Today’s the real first kickoff, and we have all kinds of fun going on games and prizes and all kinds of sampling,” said Dan Mitchell.

The Summit All Seasons Market is rooted in family tradition. Mitchell and Kris Clark’s uncles and mother started the business back in 1978.

“She started it with very low expectation just to make a little money with a little bitty stand out in Gray Summit and just slowly over time grew into this, and she’s very proud of us,” Clark said.

The Kirkwood Farmers’ Market as a whole has an array of vendors selling traditional items, like farm-fresh produce, artisanal crafts, blooming flowers, and indulgent treats.

“We’re very diligent about having the highest quality products possible,” Mitchell said.

Among some of the unique offerings are Marconi peppers, handmade soap, and fresh-made pasta from South St. Louis. One vendor is Danny Zofness from Divine Blends.

“Our whole kind of mission is to create a community around consciousness, self-awareness, self love and self acceptance,” Zofness said. “We’re just kind of doing it with a healthy cup of coffee.

For Mitchell, this is a lifelong passion.

“I’m proud of the love that we receive from our customers because they tell us constantly, ‘This is such a special place. Thanks for doing this.’”

Despite the chilly morning, visitors of all ages seemed to have a blast. The Durham family is in town from Maryland.

“This is adorable,” Courtney Durham said. “I’ve never actually been here. We’re going down to Johnson’s Shut-Ins [State Park] for it to hopefully not be overcast and see the eclipse.

The Kirkwood Farmers’ Market is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. until September 30th. However, the market extends its offerings through the fall and Christmas.

“We even have local tomatoes growing in a greenhouse right now,” Mitchell said. “They’re pretty good, and then we’ll go into the summer, produce fall, where we’re standing right now is a giant slide in the fall. And then at Christmas we enclosed part of the market and have an indoor gingerbread shop with Christmas trees and wreaths all over the place.”
