ST. LOUIS — One of FOX 2’s longest employees just announced his time here is coming to an end. Elliott Davis says he is retiring on August 2, after 45 years. He says he’s grateful to have been able to help so many people through journalism. Elliott says he’s enjoyed his career from start to finish but now he’s looking forward to spending time with his daughter and granddaughter.
“I truly believe God laid out a path for my life that would allow me to help people in need and he gave me the support to survive this 45 year run. I started out as a kid from the housing projects neighborhood and ended up interviewing governors, Presidents and other top officials,” Davis writes on Facebook. “I also want to thank you, the viewers, for supporting our efforts for all these decades. Without you, I wouldn’t still be here. Without you, ‘You Paid For It,’ would not have had the impact that I believe it’s had for so many years.”
Investigative reporter Elliott Davis is known for his impactful “You Paid For It” segments that expose government waste. He has held various officials accountable, from mayors to presidents, and has sparked significant legislative changes. His dedication to addressing social issues extends to his personal time, notably highlighting the struggles of the homeless.
Davis’s career achievements include a regional Murrow Award for his work on homelessness, Emmy Awards, and numerous other accolades from journalism and law enforcement organizations. He played a pivotal role in the “Close the Workhouse” movement, which began with his viral Facebook post showing prisoners suffering without air conditioning. This advocacy led to ongoing efforts to improve conditions in St. Louis jails.
Davis’s investigations have led to numerous reforms, including overhauling vehicle emissions testing in Missouri, passing towing legislation in Illinois, and improving educational opportunities by dissolving ineffective school districts. His work has also resulted in the renovation of public housing complexes and the ouster of corrupt officials.
A native St. Louisan, Davis attended Vashon High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Cornell University. His commitment to public accountability and his recognizable on-air presence have made him a trusted figure in St. Louis journalism.
