Driver fatally strikes child in O’Fallon, police investigating

O’FALLON, Mo. – An investigation is underway after a driver fatally struck a child Friday morning in O’Fallon.

The O’Fallon Police Department reports that a nine-year-old boy died in the collision. His identity has been withheld at this point of the investigation.

The collision happened around 11:45 a.m. near the intersection of Harmony Lane and Vine Street. Investigators say a driver in a work truck struck the victim while he was riding his bike in front of his family’s home.

Neighbors tell FOX 2 that the child was visiting family members from out-of-state.

“My friend got hurt and its really sad because he was a really good friend and he was really funny. And I just think that they should put some kind of thing down here because I still want to have a friend,” said Iann Cardinelli, a friend of the victim.

Officers have not confirmed if the driver in the crash was speeding. Neighbors stated speeding has been an issue.

“It happens over here all the time,” said neighbor Tina Meeks. “It’s not just today. It’s every day of the week. I’ve contacted the mayor’s office about it because of the construction workers being run over, almost ran over, and hit multiple times. Seeing the roofing companies coming in and out and everything.”

“It used to be a cul-de-sac. They made it a through street ever since the service road is one-way. Ever since they made it a through street, people drive through here very fast,” said neighbor Lauren Dodson.

First responders attempted life-saving measures upon arrival. The victim was rushed to hospital for treatment, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The O’Fallon Police Department says the driver remained on scene after the collision and is cooperating with authorities. Police say the driver was a 19-year-old from St. Louis County.

O’Fallon police ask anyone who might have surveillance video of the crash or witnessed it to contact their department with any relevant information.

The O’Fallon Police Department added this statement in a news release:

“The O’Fallon Police Department would like to extend or sincerest condolences to the family of the juvenile victim. We are committed to taking action to prevent any future incidents through education and enforcement. Traffic and pedestrian safety are top priorities of the O’Fallon Police Department, and we urge all residents to use caution and be on the lookout for pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and other motorists when operating a vehicle.”
