Deadly downtown shooting spurs mental health push

ST. LOUIS β€” An event focusing on the mental health challenges faced by the homeless, sparked by a recent violent incident, is taking place in downtown St. Louis today. Last Friday morning near City Hall, a confrontation between two homeless men, known as Cowboy and Rabbit, ended tragically.

A police officer shot and killed the Cowboy after he fatally wounded Rabbit. Following the violence, the authorities dismantled a homeless camp that was close by to this incident.

Homeless advocates, including longtime activist Larry Rice, will gather to discuss the mental health crisis among the homeless population. The advocates plan to detail the events of last Friday and discuss the broader issues at a news conference set for 9:45 a.m.

There will also be a memorial service for the two men. This event coincides with Mental Health Awareness Month.
