Dangerous city-owned tree removed after seven years

ST. LOUIS — A homeowner in south St. Louis has finally found relief after seven years of dealing with a dangerous city-owned dead tree, thanks to recent action by city officials.

Ceri Verble had been trying to get rid of the tree, which had caused multiple incidents of damage. Heavy branches had fallen on her property, including on her vehicle, resulting in $3,500 worth of damages, for which she was reimbursed by taxpayers.

“Recently, we had one fell fight across the sidewalk; we’ve had multiple branches fall across the street; we had cars damage mine personally; mine has been damaged twice; we know other neighbors have been damaged as well,” said Verble.

Verble recounted incidents where several cars were damaged, including one valued at $3,200. Another vehicle, valued at around $4,000 in damages, was also affected. Verble mentioned that the city covered the repairs for the $3,200 car.

“For the damage to my car, they assured me they were following the necessary procedures for trimming and removal, but action hadn’t been taken yet,” Verble explained.

FOX 2 contacted Alan Jankowski, the forestry commissioner, for a response.

“It is appreciated when residents bring potential issues to our attention. After evaluating the situation, the forestry department has decided to remove the tree,” Jankowski replied.

Within a week of the decision, the forestry department cut down the tree, eliminating the hazard for Verble and her family.
