Crumbling sidewalk in Washington Park poses danger to residents

WASHINGTON PARK, Ill. – A resident in the Metro East is facing a plight with no safe sidewalk in front of her Washington Park home.

Steps away from Sheila Pigram’s front porch is a sidewalk that has been left cracked, crumbled, and with a big drop in front of it.

“I could walk through here anytime and have a seizure and just fall, and end up busting my head. That is my concern,” she said. “They still not trying to get anything did. It makes me feel terrible. I mean, this don’t make sense.”

Pigram says city officials have been out to her home to see the hazard, but nothing has been done. FOX 2 reached out to Washington Park Mayor Leonard Moore.

“It’s not the only one…but this is something it’s been happening over years and years—it’s not just under my administration,” he said. “We are doing what we can do with what we have.”

Moore added that he couldn’t give a timeline to the situation, but says the community has the money that was promised to fix the problems.

“We have money—like millions of dollars—specifically for that I have been trying to receive for several months. The state says that the board of trustees have to give me the approval to accept the grants,” Moore said. “They won’t vote for me to accept the money from the state. We’re talking millions of dollars, specifically for the issues we’re having now with the sidewalks.”

The board of trustees says they don’t agree with the way the mayor is running the village, though. It continues to be a frustrating issue for residents like Pigram.

“This is truly dangerous. Not just for me, (but) for the kids,” she said.
