2 men await trial for 2023 University City murder

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – Two men accused of killing a man outside his workplace during a robbery gone wrong are due in court next month as the case moves closer to trial.

According to the University City Police Department’s probable cause statements, the homicide took place just after 2 p.m. on Dec. 23, 2023, at the Circle K gas station in the 7400 block of Olive Boulevard.

Police claim Eddie Wafer Jr. and Ahmad Blackmon conspired to rob Ahmad Guerin of the victim’s handgun. Wafer and Blackmon parked at Circle K, where Guerin worked, and got Guerin to get in their vehicle, a white Buick Regal.

At one point, Guerin realized he was being robbed and went to grab his gun. Police claim Wafer got into a physical altercation with Guerin and Blackmon shot him.

Blackmon and Wafer took Guerin’s backpack and drove away, leaving Guerin in the parking lot. Guerin was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.

Investigators reviewed surveillance video and pinged Blackmon’s cellphone, which they claim led them to locate the Buick in the 700 block of Baden Avenue. Video from the neighborhood showed Blackmon and Wafer exiting the vehicle with Guerin’s backpack.

Police and prosecutors claim Wafer told friends that he’d set up Guerin for the robbery and that Blackmon shot him when things went bad. Wafer fled to Texas and was arrested several weeks later.

The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Blackmon with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and first-degree robbery. Blackmon remains jailed on a $1 million cash-only bond. He’s due in court for another pre-trial hearing on July 26.

Meanwhile, Wafer faces the same charges but a $500,000 cash-only bond. Wafer appeared in court on Monday for a bond reduction hearing to secure house arrest pending trial. The judge denied any modification of the existing bond. Wafer is due back in court on July 17 for a preliminary hearing.
