14-year-old receives four-year scholarship to Webster University

ST. LOUIS — Eric Wallace, a recent eight-grade graduate of Lyon Academy, received a $20,000 scholarship to Webster University during his graduation.

Wallace was awarded The Rotary Club of St. Louis 8th Grade Scholarship Award from Webster after receiving several recommendations for the scholarship from his teachers.

Webster University has been awarding the Rotary Club scholarship to eighth graders for several years. Students can earn up to $20,000 or $5,000 per year over four years during their time at Webster.

“This is a great opportunity to continue our historic commitment to DEI and increase access to a quality education for many of our future leaders in St. Louis who may not have immediate access to higher education,” said Vincent Flewellen, Associate Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Wallace proved himself as a young scholar by being an A and B honor student during his five years at Lyon Academy. He was also awarded nine certificates, including one noting his achievement with the highest math score in his class.

Tiana Brownley, Wallace’s mother, said he is also an active athlete, participating in soccer, basketball, football and running track. He also does karate, plays chess and plays the keyboard when not in school.

During his graduation, he was given the chance to give a speech about his coaches and friends.

“I was very proud and surprised about him getting a four-year scholarship to college right out of eighth grade,” Brownley said.

Wallace also said he was happy and surprised to receive the scholarship at such a young age.

Brownley says next year Wallace will be attending Central Visual and Performing Arts High School. At only 14, he is also hoping to gain employment for the summer.
